Before you start
A mod is a file that adds or changes things in a game. Aether is the program that loads those files when Block Story starts. You write the mod; Aether finds it, orders it and starts it.
You do not need to know how Block Story works inside. You do need to write a little code (C#), but you begin by copying an example and changing texts and numbers.
What you need
- Block Story from Steam, with Aether installed.
- The .NET 9 SDK, a free program that turns your code into a mod.
- Any text editor.
- Willingness to try and get it wrong. Everything can be undone by deleting one file.
Words you will see
| Word | What it means |
|---|---|
| DLL | Your mod’s file. It is what gets copied into the game. |
| Build | Turn your code into a DLL. |
| Entrypoint | The part of your mod where Aether starts it. |
| Config | A file with options the player can change. |
| Registry | A list in the game where you add new things, such as blocks. |
| Harmony | A tool to change what the game does without touching its files. |
The path
Install Aether, create your first mod, change something, test it and share it. Each step has its own page in the left menu.
